Bring in the Bass

Back in the early ´90s, the biggest musical movement from the eyes of a middle-schooler was Miami Bass. Yup, instead of sneaking a listen at some foul-mouthed rock band, you’d slink out to your parent’s car, Return of the Bass That Ate Miami CD in hand, and crank the volume until your eardrums started waltzing. And then, once your parents grounded you for a week for destroying their incompetent factory woofers (you were doing them a favor), you sulked in your room for days, dreaming about the next time you could experience the thump of those soul-crushing beats.

But unlike slap bracelets and Z Cavaricci, Bass didn’t go out of style when you left middle school (rumblings that low can go on for decades). Nope, there are still throngs of stalwart Miami bassheads dropping bottoms and busting woofers with sub-sonic booms. And Friday night, legions of these DJs descend upon Fort Lauderdale for the first ever Battle of the Bass: Dade vs. Broward. The nightlong session of techno inspired beats will feature bass deep enough to rattle your fillings, courtesy of DJs J Nasty, Doc Nasty, Shade, Hans, and all the Autonomous Basshead Crew. Feel the original Miami noise at 11 p.m. at Voodoo Lounge (111 SW Second Ave., Fort Lauderdale). Call 954-522-0733, or visit www.abhbass.com.
Fri., Sept. 14
