I Believe There’s a Fungus Among Us

When you consider that a mushroom is just an elongated fungal growth, the little guy seems untrustworthy. When you ponder the psychedelic properties of some rouge ´shroom species from the genus Agaricus, they seem enticing. And when you think about how cute the odd little fellas can be, colorful and standing at attention like dumpy little fungal soldiers, you can see why there would be an art show based around them. What a Fun Guy is the newest exhibit by Bear and Bird Gallery (4566 N. University Dr., Lauderhill), and it’s sprouting up just in time for the beginning of the mushroom picking season.

Everyone from Skot Olsen, to N! Satterfield are creating their own artistic takes on the subject, while mushroom-themed paraphernalia abounds. You can attend, check out the adorable boutique space (it’s a loft inside of Tate’s Comics), and dine on cheese and wine while you browse the sportastic spectacle and listen to experimental music by Elyse. Finally, a really good trip with mushrooms. This event is free; if you miss the opening party, you can still check out the artwork through October 20. Mushrooms will be in full bloom at 7 p.m. Call 954-748-0181, or visit www.bearandbird.com.
