Break Out the Devilock

The Chuds are coming to get you

Like his namesake C.H.U.D.s (Cannibalistic Humanoid Underground Dwellers for you uninitiated) Dr. Chud is not so much a reanimated corpse bent on eating your brains or frolicking with your innards as a fun-loving zombie looking to rock out a bit before the rigor mortis takes over. The horror-punk virtuoso has played drums with dozens of groups but is best known for the years he spent with Jerry Only’s reformed Misfits. With Chud on drums, the Misfits took on a more punctuated appearance: wielding B-movie camp and classic horror motifs like an undead version of KISS. And while that stylish (and somewhat cartoonish) goth-meets-punk-meets-psychobilly style was rejected by a lot of O.G. Misfits fans, albums like Famous Monsters pretty much cemented their place in the horror-punk crematorium.

But late in 2000, the good doctor split from the Misfits and launched a series of side projects, including a tribute to Iggy Pop alongside Joey Ramone and his ultimate undead dream band, the X-Ward. With it’s Gwar-like display of blood and gore, the X-Ward is set to reclaim the title of horror-punk’s leading zombies during the “2007 Nurses and Curses Halloween Tour,” which will visit Studio A (60 NE 11 St., Miami) this Sunday night. Tickets cost $10. Call 305-358-ROCK, or visit www.studioamiami.com.
