Toss That Salad

There’s no doubt about it: Americans are weight obsessed. We spent all last month talking about Britney’s paunch, and yet anytime Nicole Richie or one of the other post-teen debutants drops a couple of sizes we start tossing out words like anorexia. The truth is, all this talk about who’s fat and who’s not has a disastrous effect not only on our self-image, but on our relationship with food too.

But food’s not to blame, folks, it’s the culture – at least according to the new musical Food Fight! The play, opening Thursday at the Maltz Jupiter Theatre (1001 E. Indiantown Rd., Jupiter), takes a closer look at this food-hating, self-loathing weight culture of ours by turning classic songs into delicious parody. The show tackles it all: overeating is deftly ripped a new one during “I Went to the Buffet Line” (sung to the tune of “I Heard it Through the Grape Vine”); plastic surgery and beautification speared to “Botox Queen” (“Dancing Queen); and celebrity chefs reamed by “Look at Me, I’m Rachel Ray” (instead of Sandra Dee). Irony alert: All of the satire is sung in the confines of a women’s gym. Food Fight! runs until October 28. Tickets start at $32. Call 561-575-2223, or visit www.jupitertheatre.com.
Thursdays-Sundays. Starts: Oct. 11. Continues through Oct. 28, 2007
