Battle of the Greenmarkets

Palm Beach County is lucky enough to be graced with two awesome greenmarkets, the West Palm Beach Greenmarket(Second St. and Narcissus Ave., West Palm Beach) and the Delray Greenmarket(150 E. Atlantic Ave., Delray Beach), both of which recently opened for the fall season. We know what you’re thinking: “This town ain’t big enough for two greenmarkets. The only solution is a 300-style market war, where Spartan warriors do battle over the freshness of their produce.” Well, hold your horses, Leonidas. You, the lucky consumer, don’t have to maintain greenmarket monogamy. You can have an open relationship with both, and here are a couple of good reasons why:

Cider Donuts: Aside from sporting a wide selection of fresh pastas, veggies, and exotic sundries, the WPBGM is home to some fine prepared vittles, such as Anita’s Guacamole (New Times Best Guacamole 2007, available at both markets) and Chef John Carlino’s famous Cider Donuts. The apple cider infused pastry is popular in northeastern states, where connoisseurs enjoy its moister, cake-like consistency with a glass of cider on the side. Carlino fries his up fresh at his stand and coats them with a dusting of cinnamon sugar for a spicy, sweet bite.

Organic Produce: The DGM, now in it’s 12th season, is featuring a new, wider selection of organic produce, such as eggplant, gourmet lettuces, ripe tomatoes, and wheatgrass. The certified organic stuff has been a big hit, but that’s not to say the rest of the produce – locally grown with the same careful treatment given to organic goods – isn’t equally fresh. The market is also home to In the Dog House Bakery and their selection of all natural, gourmet dog treats (with nifty flavors like peanut butter), and takes place in Worthing Park, so visitors can lounge out with their eats all afternoon.
