Spank Rock

It’s always interesting when organizations invite comedian Chris Rock to host their live televised events and then go into an uproar when the dude swears on stage. In July, Rock hosted the Live Earth concert at London’s Wembley Stadium, a banal concert/pep-rally for global warming. Mere seconds into his introduction, Rock launched into a tirade about driving “smaller-ass” cars to benefit the environment and even referred to the crowd as “motherfuckers” (certainly, that part wasn’t entirely true). Live Earth promptly cut Rock off and did the rest of the show without him. A similar thing happened two year ago, when Rock hosted the 77th Annual Academy Awards: Rock poked fun at a number of actors (duh), and a few, including Sean Penn, got extremely miffed.

So our question is this: How the hell do you invite Chris Rock to emcee your live show and not expect him to offend someone, motherfuckers? He’s made a career of playing hopscotch over boundaries. Do you really think he’ll tone his act down for your benefit? Maybe that’s why Rock has decided to do a stint of small, unpublicized shows this week at the Palm Beach Improv (550 S. Rosemary Ave., Suite 250, West Palm Beach), a joint where no one is going to give him the hook for dropping a few “F” Bombs. If you’re extremely lucky, you might be able to still snag a ticket for Thursday’s shows at 8 or 10 p.m.; they cost $32. Call 561-833-1812, or visit www.palmbeachimprov.com.
