Lip Service

You’ve always wondered what the inside of a drag queen’s makeup box would read like (maybe something to the effect of, “glittery mascara, five colors of; industrial size bottle of Nair, for problem areas; and a length of heavy-duty masking tape, uses unknown”). Lucky for you, inquisitive reader, there’s Oakland Park’s newest drag and dinner hotspot, Lips(1421 E. Oakland Park Blvd., Oakland Park). The restaurant is putting all questions to bed with a weekend-long grand opening soiree that’s part dinner theater, part exotic drag revue, and all man.

Lips’ sassy sister locations in Greenwich Village and San Diego have been rocking an appealing mix of bawdy humor, fierce décor, and drag-themed eats since the ´90s, and the new digs will follow close to the mold. After all the rhinestones are affixed, guests will have a chance to get up close and personal with the gals during weekly events like Thursday’s “Dinner with the Divas,” a collection of celeb look-alikes, such as Cher, Madonna, and Tina Turner. There’s also “Glitz & Glamour,” a Friday/Saturday party, where the girls dress to impress and guests dance to a live DJ, and “Gospel Brunch,” the Sunday holy-roller drag revue. Nightly seatings are at 6:30 or 9 p.m. Thursday, Friday, and Saturday; Sunday brunch kicks off at noon or 2 p.m. There’s no charge to sit at the bar, but tables come with a per person food minimum of $15, as well as a $5 entertainment fee.
