Real Life in Black and White

Nothing turns friends into frienemies quicker than acts of subterfuge, like one hoodwinking the other into a “dinner party” when the real goal is to show slideshows of a vacation, bridal shower, or birthing process. Yikes, indeed. It isn’t as much the subject matter (except for with birthing pics -- shudder) as the sheer volume of these unedited images; there’s a limit to how many pictures you can appreciate in any one visit, right?

That’s the gist of “Focus On” at the Norton Museum of Art (1451 S. Olive Avenue, West Palm Beach), running now through September 2008. The hefty 162-photo collection, donated by Irene Hunt, features black-and-white works by masters of the lens like Elliot Erwitt, Gary Winogrand, Manuel Alvarez Bravo, and Edouard Boubat. But Focus On is smart. It’s rolling out in three separate, concise installments so that you can really pore over the art, without feeling overwhelmed. Erwitt and Winogrand are on display now with an $8 admission. We’ve been promised there will be no birthing pics. Call 561-832-5196, or visit www.norton.org.
