Imagining an audience naked is touted as a cure for stage fright. In Naked Boys Singing, however, the scenario is reversed: the actors are naked and the audience watches, perhaps in fright.
A movie based on a Broadway play, Naked Boys Singing starts with 10 denuded dudes on-stage, belting out a show-tune, Gratuitous Nudity, before a real audience in L.A. Thus, a sausage fest becomes classic vaudeville rounded off by pert butts and the un-choreographed swinging of dicks. The young, handsome, bear-naked men perform 16 campy songs-and-dances in total, including a tribute to circumcision (The Bliss of Briss), a breakdown of gay mens struggles in locker rooms (Fight the Urge), and a more sober eulogy to a lover perished from AIDS (Look at What Youve Missed). Its billed as a de-tabooification and exaltation of the male form à la Michelangelos sculptures but theres sparse plot. And who needs plot when the penis is so ample? Naked Boys Singing screens today at 4 and 8:30 p.m. at the Lake Worth Playhouse (713 Lake Avenue, Lake Worth). Tickets cost $8. Call 561-586-6410, or visit www.lakeworthplayhouse.org.
