This release commemorates the 25th year of a jazz supergroup — pianist Keith Jarrett, bassist Gary Peacock, and drummer Jack DeJohnette — one of the longest-running bands in jazz history. They are frequently referred to as Jarrett's "standards trio," as their repertoire consists of jazz and (pre-rock-'n'-roll-era) pop perennials such as "What's New" and Miles Davis' "Four." One of the exceptional things about this group is that Peacock and DeJohnette — each a master musician — both played with the late Bill Evans, the jazz piano icon who heavily influenced Jarrett. Aspects of Evans' classic trio sound are all over this astounding live set, including intensely lyrical interpretations plus innate and unforced swing from each member. Even though Jarrett, Peacock, and DeJohnette stretch out quite a bit, there is nary an unnecessary note. Best of all — and who'da thunk it? — Jarrett, Mr. Serious Artiste, actually sounds like he's unequivocally enjoying himself! The giddy joie de vivre the trio brings to Fats Waller's swing-era gems "Honeysuckle Rose" and "Ain't Misbehavin' " is alone worth sitting through this session. About two hours long, energetic, thoughtful, and beautifully recorded, My Foolish Heart is one of the great jazz albums of '07.
