561-ART-WORK

Kevro's Art Bar is a place "created by artists, for the artist in you," which means instead of getting drunk while shaking your ass to Britney Spears (gimme, gimme more), you'll probably be engaged in deep discussions on the importance of post-modernism. Or maybe you'll be playing Ping-Pong. My point is that Kevro's is not your run-of-the-mill sip-it-slow/dip-it-low type of joint. It opened in June of this year, and in the few months since, Kevro's Art Bar has become the picturesque headquarters for Boca and Delray's "creative class" — as part-owner/bartender Deb Sullivan puts it — to whet their appetite for art and wet their palates with wine and beer. The selection is not very large (about 20 beers and 20 wines), but these are people of taste who overlook quantity for quality any day. The walls, doors, windows, and even part of the patio's floor are covered in large, sprawling artwork. Kevin "Kevro" Rouse, the artist/owner/namesake of the bar, has huge photo-transparencies, acrylics, and photography on canvas (ask him to show you the Chaplinesque self-portrait). But Kevro's Art Bar is about the art, not the Kevro. So to include other artists' work, he began handing out blank three-inch ceramic tiles and watched as his customers returned them as miniature masterpieces. The result is displayed behind the bar. Catch Renda Writer hosting open-mic Tuesdays, or come in Wednesday to watch artists paint live. On Fridays, local artists take turns playing original sets. And Saturday is filmmaker night. The creative community has gotten so cozy here that several artists have joined forces to put together Jag Fu, the first of what they hope will be an annual collaborative art "experiment," and the Underground Concert Series, which will feature Palm Beach and Miami artists.
