Give a Little, Get a Lot

Charity events don’t have to be stuffy, monotonous affairs. Sometimes you’ve got to get a little crazy to raise interest – maybe incorporate a hip fashion show and a pyrotechnics display on one stage. Then, maybe you’ve got to show some short films and bring out a troupe of bellydancers to undulate for the donators. If this is sounding like some strange incarnation of the Gong Show, it’s not. It’s actually what will be going down at the Minerva Films Fashion Fundraiser for the Make-A-Wish Foundation this Saturday night at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts (201 SW Fifth Ave., Fort Lauderdale). Well, all that, plus a Tina Turner impersonator. Whatevs, man. You’re allowed to be crazy as fuck when you’re being, like, a humanitarian.

Minerva Films – a local film production company that does shorts, indie films, commercials, and corporate work – is putting on the shindig in hopes of raising enough coin to fulfill one wish for a needy child in the South Florida area. The party will kick off at 7 p.m., when fashion designer Shaeffa showcases over 100 new pieces from her Spring catalogue. Once the last model has cleared the stage, the lights will dim for the screening of local short films Red Bird and Harmony, followed by Nyann Young, a.k.a. the One Tina Turner Impersonator Who is an Actual Woman. Tickets cost $75.50, or for $100 you can mingle with the artists at the after party, which runs from 9 to 10 p.m. and features an open bar and hor d’oeuvres.
