The Ten Most Hated Figures in Hip-hop

Break out the Haterade

Judging by record and ringtone sales, hip-hop is the most popular genre of music in the country. There's a host of cocksure yet affable rappers out there for whom people can't help but cheer these days. But who needs to go over a list of the most beloved rappers in the game, when there are so many hip-hop jackasses worth writing about? At the risk of needing a bodyguard after this is published, here's a list of the most hated figures in hip-hop. Man, was it hard to narrow this down!

10. Soulja Boy Tell 'Em: Look, anyone who raps like he has Down Syndrome and yells "Yoouuuu" as the chorus of his hooks, is going to wind up on a lot of people's shit lists. This 17-year-old Atlanta-based MC is barely mature enough to have facial hair, and his pubescent rap voice is plain annoying. He's already a platinum-selling artist (via ringtones, not albums), yet anyone will tell you he has no talent. To his credit, he did come up with a dance that's more popular than the moonwalk, but between his wack sunglasses and the songs on his album with titles like "Booty Meat" and "Pass it to Arab," it's hard to think he'll amount to anything more than a two-hit wonder.

9. Paul Wall: The grills are getting to be too much. Here in the South, we have a strong love for teeth that shine, but Paul Wall's diamond encrusted smile is taking it too far. Call it reverse racism, but platinum grills just don't look right on white dudes. His rhymes about candy-coated slabs are becoming passé, and the novelty of hearing a white guy screwing and chopping beats has already worn thin. Eminem manages to reinvent himself; Kid Rock switched to country-fried rock 'n' roll, and, if Paul Wall hasn't gotten the newsflash, white guys have to keep it moving to remain relevant in hip-hop. (We wish this wasn't a double standard, as too many rappers are complacent in general.)

8. Cam'ron: Few rappers in history have ever fallen out of the 'hood's good graces like Harlem rapper Cameron "Cam'ron" Giles. He's teetered on wackness throughout his career, and he's better at creating drama than he is at creating good music. He's ended up on the worst end of his beefs with Jay-Z and 50 Cent, and when Cam'ron got shot last year, he wanted the world to be proud of him for "not snitching" on the culprit. Whatever cool points that may have earned him, he immediately lost by going on 60 Minutes to keep the "Stop Snitching" campaign alive. Does it really need support?

7. Nelly: This dude's raps are so misogynistic, even other rappers had to call him out on it. KRS-One can't stand him (a bad sign), and he's banned from performing at several universities because female student groups shut down his shows. Think about it: The lyrics to his most popular song to date include, "Drop down and get your eagle on, girl!" If that's not enough, his attempt at jacking Run DMC's "My Adidas" and turning it into "Air Force Ones" just further cemented the notion that he's an ass clown who should be banned from making music, permanently.

6. Fergie: You might wonder why she's in the hip-hop category, since Ms. Fergalicious has enjoyed a successful year in the pop market as a solo act. But it wasn't long ago that she was pimping hip-hop with the Black Eyed Peas and ruining one of the genre's most original acts. Before Fergie joined the Peas, they were a respectable three man group with crisp rhymes and hilarious skits on their albums: Just check out Behind the Front and Bridging the Gap for evidence of that. Then the group went from ultra underground to super commercial with one bad decision — hiring Fergie. In some regards, she's the group's Yoko Ono; despite bringing them fame and fortune, she utterly ruined their reputation. What's worse is that it's hard to remember that she was once a part of hip-hop, since she's already moved on and left the Peas in the dust.

5. DJ Khaled: Despite how much we love Khaled in South Florida, the fact is most other people don't feel the same. The general consensus is that he's a self-aggrandizing blabbermouth who is a great radio DJ, but that's about it. Certain Khaled-isms, like "Lissssten" and "We the Best," annoy the shit out of people north of the Mason-Dixon line, and since he doesn't really produce, rap, or engineer any of the tracks on his albums, a lot of folks in the hip-hop know can't figure out what the hell he does. Call it lingering racism from 9/11 if you want, but America isn't ready to hear a big, surly Palestinian bragging on the microphone, and it's what currently makes Mr. Khaled Khaled one of the most hated figures in rap music.

I love that this Cory Evans guy thinks the writer is a late-blooming white dude. Wrong. And wrong. But seriously funny!

This is a great current list of folks that hip-hop and pop fans hate. And in fact, Fergie did ruin the peas. Nelly still sucks. 50 blows. Superhead does both. This is a pretty accurate list to me. Right on JC! I Especially hate 5-0, he has made a career out of terrorizing hip-hop and I Hope he finally gets what he deserves. and let's not forget the other people like funkmaster flex.

  • sonia Gutierrez 12/21/2007 10:57:00 PM

LOL this was some good stuff... lol

And Let's not forget interscope records, how they went from being the greatest record label from 1992-97, to being the most horrible record label and most hated in entertainment history (Eminem aka The Most Overrated rapper of all time, 50/G-Unit/Soulja Boy, Limp Bizkit etc.), worse than bad boy and all the other record labels put together and they also destroyed pac's legacy just as much as suge knight and not to mention recently they want to kick Joell Ortiz off the record label now, No Wonder interscope died with tupac.

  • Afi K. James 12/21/2007 6:48:00 PM

And ya'll forgot to add Funkmaster Flex to the list as well, while he is an excellent DJ, turntablist and car lover, this guy was hated on just as much. and also Hot 97, the most controversial radio station in radio history.

  • Afi K. James 12/21/2007 6:44:00 PM

Not to mention 5-0 made mainstream hip-hop into the number#1 rouge genre on earth and because so many of our allies are no longer. He has made more bad hip-hop than any other rapper combined and one of the biggest mistakes in hip-hop since The MC Hammer/Vanilla Ice era. When I Saw that era, I Knew it was a mistake to listen to, after the MC Hammer/Vanilla Ice, the hip-hop community & the music fans would never again go through a hip-hop misadventure and that's is exactly what's happening with 50/G-Unit. and you forgot to add eminem to the list, He is hated just as much.

  • Afi K. James 12/21/2007 6:33:00 PM

5-0 is defintely the most hated and most despicable person in history, he has made some many people's lives living hell, he tricked the hip-hop community & music fans about his shot 9 times, he did not tell the truth, he clamied that ja rule is a pop star, look what he's doing now, he said that he was gonna change hip-hop for the better, it was only a figment of his imagination, he said that he hates bush*t, yet he supports him every day, 5-0 is also a neo-con, more than any other rapper and he has made more bad hip-hop than any other rapper since the early 90's and he claimed he's a decider, well he's not the decider, he is the liar. Thank God that GZA speaks the truth about the industry and he's a hero besides game for exposing him for the disaster that 5-0 has brought into the mainstream in our name.

Dude 1st of all Hip Hop has brough white and black people together unlike nothing else. However some white people have not caught on to certain things. I am saying this becausei can tell how you wrote this you are a late bloomer white dude. Not a problem just learn more before you comment. Some i can feel but some i am reading like huh? I dont like Nelly but " drop down and get your eagle on i s not his most popular song. Fergie is probably the least thought of in Hip Hop. You never mentioned Vanilla Ice because you dont remember 3rd Bass. As well as a few other things i can't see because im typing. All i am saying is study before you type cause you sound lik esome of these teenagers who wont learn Hip Hop history which is why they are wack and think we adults dont except them . We do its just they are wack and it shows because i can See they dont know their history. You'll never know where your going if you dont know where you came from Peace Cnspeace

You guys are hatin' on Nelly? Huh? He sold over 10 million albums w/ his first cd and KRS was pissed b/c of Nelly's #1 song. Most of those rappers are just jealous and let's not forget all the critics who made fun of Nelly for basically opening the door for Justin Timberlake to the R&B world. Don't hate just b/c more than just the people in da' hood are bumpin' some County Grammer! Dude's got skills! and he didn't do anything wrong w/ popularizing the ish out of air force ones. Then he makes a song w/ Tim McGraw!?!?!? And has his songs playing on f'in' country stations too! that's called a smart business decision. FnF UP UP and AWAAAAAAAAAY!

  • DaNger 12/20/2007 10:34:00 PM

I cant believe Paul Wall is on this list? Whoever wrote this article is very out of touch. Paul Wall you mean that Bobby Hill look alike from like 5 years ago?? If hes annoying then we can talk about how Mike JOnes makes me want to kill myself, but whats the point those guy where just one hit wonders. This list should be about people who suck ass now, case in point Lil WAyne. Man this guy has straight up ruined plenty of good songs in the past few years somebody needs to stop this asshole. Suge Knight are you serious? and calling tupac "black juesus" dude Tupac sucked ass, while he was alive everybody hated him he was a convicted rapist that got ran out his own hood= no not Oakland where he said he was from but Mill Valley where he really was from. Dudes bodyguard shot a 7 year old girl in the head.

Entertaining read. Ignore clowns like Young Adult who feel they have to make their own lists with irrelevant acts like Ma$e and Ja Rule

  • 12/20/2007 8:26:00 AM

Fergie didn't "ruin" BEP. That's an historical revision. BEP ruined BEP. They had a really good debut but they wanted to be rich and famous (like most people in rap, even Saigon). Their follow up was garbage. Fergie (and Ron Fair and Justin Timberlake) gave BEP what they really wanted all along when Elephunk came out. So then you have your pop rappin' BEP rather than your socially conscious sometimes alt.rappin BEP.

  • Young Adult 12/20/2007 2:43:00 AM

I am sorry but I think I could write a better list. You are pretty out of touch with hate, and that's just how it is. If we are going to count irrelevant people like Nelly, you should include Mase, who is hated by so many. Supahead is hated by some rappers I guess, but really, #2? Over Diddy? Kanye is hated by so many. Who hates Cam'ron? Hip hop purists maybe. But I am sure they have more of a bone to pick people like Nore who had much more talent in the first place, then went Reggaeton, Fat Joe, who is an unsuccesful sell-out, or the tons of other one hit wonders. Khalid is annoying, but have you ever listened to a Kay Slay mixtape? Now that's annoying. Let me break it down for you: Kanye West: Kanye only barely makes it, but there are a lot of Kanye haters and a lot of reasons to hate Kanye. Firstly, the ego and sense of self-entitlement. While every rapper seems to believe they deserve to be number one, no one has ever whined about it like Kanye. Second, he gets called out for being an in-closet homosexual by many hip hop fans, and even some rappers such as Beans and Jim Jones. However, Kanye is still the only rapper who can quickly go platinum, mends fences with his detractors quickly, and you'll be hard pressed to find a reasonable person who doesn't think he has dope production. Jim Jones : A one hit wonder, and represents all that is wrong with the Dipset movement. He can't rap, yet appears on many, many songs. His ballin' gimmick was popular, but Jay-Z wrecked him on this track. He got beat up at the Rucker by Lil Cease. He gets facials. Essentially the beacon of hate for hip hop purists for the dipset. Yung Joc: If there is one person who you can channel all the southern hate into, Mr. Joc is probably a good candidate. His "Goin down" dance should've been another one hit wonder, but somehow he has manages to hang on, and still have new garbage singles. Not only that, he manages to get himself on quality remixs and mixtapes. Talentless. Birdman : Speaking of which, next up is Birdman Jr. He has tons of terrible songs, and no one would call him a good rapper (at least, not behind his back). Not only that, he is allegedly responsible for Hot Boy member Turk's heroin addiction, and is famous for stiffing his artists on money. Though many of the South's most talented (Young Buck, Juvenile, Mannie Fresh, etc.) have come through the halls of Cash Money, the only one who has stayed is Lil Wayne, his adopted son, and shared subject of a photographic of the pair kissing. Ja Rule (Murder Inc): If there is an easy target to pick on, it's Ja. From his attempted transition from thug rapper to thug rnb singer, to his career demolition at the hands of Fiddy, Ja Rule has been the subject of much mockery for many years, along with his wack crew, Murda Inc. Murda Inc. can be blamed for Suburbia's picking up of saying "It's Murdaaaah" which before youtube was the equivalent of some white girls doing the crank dat. Bow Wow/Jermaine Dupri: There is no one more hip-pop than these two. Their legacy epitomizes the commercialization of Hip Hop. This would be bad enough, but they are also responsible for talking smack to people who are responsible for much greater contributions, from Dupri claiming he was the GOAT producer, to Bow Wow dissing people like Will Smith. At least they gave Da Brat a career(I guess?) Mase: Turned bad boy into a pop label. Got run out of harlem. Became a preacher. Came back and failed. Came back with G-Unit and failed. Claimed he wrote much beloved Big L's rhymes. His songs from the Jiggy era sound like the reason why the Jiggy era died so young. 50 Cent (Tony Yayo): Potentially the most hateable person of the modern hip hop era, 50 Cent started his career on hate. His underground single "How To Rob" drew hate from just about everyone in the industry. That was his high point. Soon after, he used his brand G-Unit to ensure that hip-pop was the flavour of the 00s in hip hop. Talking shit about almost everyone's favourite rapper, such as Nas and Ghostface, 50 always used beef to sell records, while drawing the hate from everyone who didn't buy his records. Let's not forget that he still uses his hood status despite his living in Connecticut. Or that after lambasting Ja for turning pop singer, he went and that himself. Or for signing Mobb Deep and MOP. Or for G-unit clothes. Or for Tony Yayo, one of the worst rappers anyone has ever heard. Suge: I don't really need to go into why Suge is so hated, because the list in this article covered it pretty much. Though, it really needs to be mentioned how he has milked Pac's career for the last twelve years, releasing 3 tupac albums a year, despite any new material. Diddy: If you can say anyone has raped hip hop, it's Diddy. While he started an underground label with greats such as Craig Mack, and of course Biggie, he also changed that label into a device for producing one hit wonders, destroying the careers of some underground rappers such as the Lox, Black Rob, G-Dep, Jae Hood, etc. He is a terrible, admittedly ghostwritten rapper. The nude Sean John ads. He created Bad Boy South (see Yung Joc). He created that monstrosity of a tribute to Big "Every Breath You Take" and stole the grammy from Wu. He claims to have invented the remix. He has changed his name too many times. He got Shyne locked up. The list goes on, and will go on for some time. And that's how it gets broke down.

great list but where is Kanye? I am not going into detail why he sucks but come on hes the worst!
