Everyone Loves a Parade

The holidays are a great time for pomp and circumstance. We deck our halls with displays of lights, ginormous Christmas trees, and oversized inflatable figures -- and because personal displays aren’t enough, crowds often head out to the most ornate neighborhoods to ooh and aah at the decorative spectacle. Look no further today -- your one-stop ´hood for holidazzle is Coral Gables. At the 59th annual Junior Orange Bowl Parade, there’ll be floats and marching bands and plenty to gawk at.

This year’s honorary grand marshal is Barrington Irving, who made Miami proud by becoming both the first black man and youngest individual to fly solo around the world. Behind Barrington, you can gaze in wonder as a litany of marching bands from local schools, Girl Scout groups, and the Coral Gables Police and Fire Rescue parade by. A cool collection of antique and collectable cars will join the route and cruise through downtown Coral Gables, followed by spectacular floats. Grandstand tickets cost $10 each, but families are welcome to bring their own chairs to set up along the parade route and see it for free. The parade starts on Biltmore Way, travels past City Hall, ventures down Miracle Mile, and makes a stop along Ponce de Leon. Call 305-662-1210, or visit www.jrorangebowl.com for details.
