Golden Age Blowout

It was only in 1957 that the Seminole Tribe of Florida was given sovereignty and created its own constitution. It had been quite a rough and rocky road to that point – the Seminoles, actually made up of multiple, native tribes living in the wilds of Florida, had endured centuries of war, poverty, and attrition. But once they were recognized as autonomous, the Tribe levied its talent and resources into the empire they have today.

And, sure, it may seem like the Seminoles feel more at home among the whir of the slots (excuse us, “class II gaming machines”) than the buzzing of the Glades, but they have a deep respect for their history and heritage. So to celebrate their fiftieth anniversary, the Seminoles are throwing a party – and you’re invited! Head down to the Okalee Village at the Seminole Hard Rock Casino (1 Seminole Way, Hollywood) this Friday through Sunday for Rock with the Crocs. The three-day celebration will feature a live alligator show with Manny Puig, that crazy, bearded wildlife expert from Jackass and Wildboys, plus country rockers Little Texas and Ross Mathews of Tonight Show fame. Tickets cost $35 to $75, and include access to Okalee Village, where you can check out demonstrations on native life. Call 305-669-1360, or visit www.ticketmaster.com.
