Remember those wonderful high school days? A period of self-discovery completely ruined by the pressures of fitting in, mostly to avoid persecution from fellow classmates. You may have been a jock or one of those popular kids (weirdo) -- but if you’re reading this, there’s a good chance you were a geek like the rest of us. It wasn’t easy hiding our love for comic books, Star Wars, or hair metal, but in some way it made us stronger and better people.

Thank goodness being a nerd has much more cachet now. From popular television (30 Rock), to high-grossing films (Superbad), America has learned to embrace its inner geek. Video games have even become more acceptable. Did anyone else see Ellen playing Guitar Hero the other day? While we celebrate our new status in pop culture, it’s important not to forget our past.

The new animated film Persepolismay help humble us. Based on a graphic novel, it tells the true story of a young Iranian girl growing up during the Islamic Revolution. In a place where thousands are enslaved and women’s rights and opinions are repressed, writer/illustrator Marjane Satrapi discovers love, individuality, and Iron Maiden.
