Ain’t that American?

When compiling a list of things that are distinctly American, baseball and apple pie pop to mind. But shouldn’t we add country music as well? Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, and Willie Nelson are just a few citizens of these great states who’ve crafted and popularized the genre. David Allan Coecounts himself among them (often by dropping their names in his songs). The multitalented Coe states on his official website that, along with being a musician, he is a magician, deep-sea treasure hunter, and a movie star! Of course, he also claims he’s not prejudiced; but a glance at his discography (namely the Underground CD) seems to suggest otherwise, managing to drop the N Bomb in one song title. Coe’s defense it that those songs were written for shock value, and he’s since grown as a man. The best way to test that theory may be to check him out at 8 p.m. Saturday at the Culture Room (3095 N. Federal Hwy., Fort Lauderdale). Tickets cost $22 for this 18 and up show. Call 954-564-1074, or visit www.cultureroom.net.
