Don’t be a Slouch: Get Your Yoga On

During a yoga session, your body goes through metamorphosis. Granted, some of us experience a clunkier transition of shapes while others slip gracefully in and out of their postures, but the overall effect of springing from coils into lanky lengths remains the same: beautiful. Nobody knows that better than Edward Clark, creator of Tripsichore (pronounced: trip-sic’-or-ee) Yoga Theatre.

His troupe of dancers, actors, and yoga practitioners has been creating its flowing, anatomical sculptures since 1992 while receiving praise around the globe. By fusing traditional asana positions with tightly constructed choreography and music, the yogis become pliable art – pressing and expanding into thematic displays. The result is as wonder-inspiring as Cirque de Soleil, though it’s rooted in pure, oh-my-god-how-can-they-bend-like-that, yoga.

Clark’s London-based ensemble stops at Red Pearl Yoga (918 NE 20th Ave., Fort Lauderdale) for two workshops this weekend: one on Friday morning and one on Saturday morning. If you don’t feel quite bendy enough to participate in those, you can catch the performance on Friday night at 8 p.m. in Art Serve’s auditorium (1350 E. Sunrise Blvd.). Performance tickets cost $20 in advance, $25 at the door, and only cash will be accepted. Workshops cost $65 apiece or $110 for both. Call 954-828-1651, or email info@redpearlyoga.com.
