Technically it doesn’t matter whether you’re gay or straight during the South Beach Winter Party Festival -- just so long as you don’t mind being stared at by 10,000 shaved nipples. They will be pointing out of the shirtless chests of the masses: flocks of gay men, fresh off planes from chilly climates, ready to do some sweaty dancing in Miami’s warm “winter” breezes. It can be a touch intimidating; all those fellows comparing who spends more time in the gym, but the payoff is a big week of parties – so you’ll just have to – eh -- suck it up and go with the flow.

The annual celebration is varied in its components, and there’s something suited to everyone. For instance: Wednesday is the kick-off party at the Surfcomber Hotel (1717 Collins Ave., Miami Beach), from 7 to 9:30 p.m. That’s where officers from the big Miami LGBT organizations will hang out and mingle with the crowd in a low-key environment. The swank level will be high: expect cocktails, hors d'oeuvres, music, and raffle prizes, all served up poolside. It’s a nice alternative to the sweaty-dancing-shirtless-nightclub things to follow.
