There are two Gay Mafias. The one is a criminal syndicate that lords over Hollywood and, through that, the nation. Its membership includes Calvin Klein, Tom Cruise, Anderson Cooper, and Tinky-Winky of the Teletubbies. Dick Cheney, always a man for conspiracies, holds an honorary chair on the Board of Elders. The other Gay Mafia is a sketch and improvisational troupe from L.A.

The latter is of particular interest because it's performing at the Broward Center tonight (201 SW Fifth Ave., Fort Lauderdale), as part of Art Explosion’s finale. Performers Mark Rakow, Diana Yanez, Alex Garner, Nancy Kissam, Kurt Hall, Mike Player, and Star Ahrens have been around for years, pioneering America’s first Queer Comedy Festival and extorting vast sums of money from hundreds of frightened discotheque owners — for their own “protection.” On this night, they perform with lesbian rappers Lisp and Havana and the filthy, filthy drag goddess/prestidigitator “Cashetta.” The show starts at 7:30 p.m., and tickets cost $30 - $40.
