Shaky Ground

They say blood is thicker than water, that the family bond is the tightest one can share with another human being. Maybe so, but that doesn’t mean you don’t want to serve your family a tall glass of shut-the-hell-up every now and again. Especially when personal politics are involved: Jimmy may be your brother, but he’s got some messed-up views on gun control. Likewise, you know your grandparents are good people, but they’ve got the most infuriating, antiquated views on race relations and gay rights. In short, them bonds may be strong, but they ain’t unbreakable.

So imagine a scenario where five vastly dissimilar women of varying generations come together to discuss their socially- and politically-charged lives. Sparks will fly, right? Well, that’s the formation of Jar the Floor, the latest production by the Women’s Theatre Project. The play by Cheryl L. West seeks to establish what happens when family ties are put to the test by belief and we’re forced to find other connections between ourselves and our nearest and dearest.
