It’s Getting Hot in Here

The ambient music scene in South Florida is a little like George W. Bush’s opinions on global warming – some peeps think it doesn’t exist, but that doesn’t mean it’s not there. Now, DJs Jeff Wrye and Floyd Kelley – the dudes behind the Foundation nightclub reunion parties – are spearheading the charge to bring ambient back into the forefront of the collective consciousness. They’ve started Global Warming, a downtempo component to their now monthly Foundation Fridays night at Respectables (518 Clematis St., West Palm Beach).

The theme may sound political, but it’s actually a bit more politics of dancing than insistent activism. Wrye says the name refers to the call for change in not just the environment but the music scene as well. (Global Warming was also the name of an ambient dance club in Fort Lauderdale that spun wax around the time of the O.G. Foundation.) On the first Friday of each month, the duo will fire up the decks on RSC’s back patio and spin an eclectic mix of ambient, trip-hop, acid-jazz, down tempo, and abstract – in short, groovable tunes from the likes of Aphex Twin, Coldcut, and Future Sound of London. Best of all: No cover. Wrye and Kelley are also looking to get some environmentally active supporters and live artists on board to flesh out the night’s ethically focused element – takers can contact them at www.myspace.com/globalwarmingrsc.
