The Queen of Ozone Park

Let’s not understate the facts just because they’re so wild: Bernadette Peters is the single greatest living exponent of musical theater. Frank Rich said so in the mid-1980s, during Ms. Peters’ star turn in Song & Dance, and every critic on the planet has more-or-less agreed, as Ms. Peters blazed through Into The Woods, The Goodbye Girl, Annie Get Your Gun, and Gypsy in the years that followed (forever usurping the primacy of Ethel Merman during the latter two). This is no mere queer fanboy gushing. Nay, this is what you’ll hear from just about anybody who’s ever seen or heard Ms. Peters do anything at all.

As a comedienne, actress, and singer, she brings a warming, undefinable x-factor to everything she touches; something bordering on cutesy but never quite hitting it, which operates on some fine frequency that nobody’s ever even tried to imitate. As a solo song-stylist, Ms. Peters does sultry (“Fever”), schmaltzy (“Unexpected Song”), sweet (“No One Is Alone”), and stylish (“You Could Drive a Person Crazy”), and she does them all well enough that you’d be a fool not to see her do it at the Arsht Center (1300 Biscayne Blvd., Miami) this evening.
