Few modern jazz guitarists today have had the opportunity to collaborate with as many artists as Missouri's Pat Metheny has throughout his career. Joni Mitchell, Milton Nascimento, and Jaco Pastorius are just a few of the recording giants Metheny has worked with over the years, and he briefly lived here in South Florida when he and Pastorius became friends. For his latest release, Day Trip, he teams with renowned musicians Christian McBride of Philadelphia and Antonio Sanchez of Mexico, and the trio took a collection of Metheny compositions old and new, rehearsed them on the road, then recorded them during a one-day session late in 2005. Nonesuch Records just released Day Trip, and the tunes here devolve from free-form jazz-rock to blues and beyond. In a live setting, the trio plays closely together even when on a large stage. Metheny seems to take advantage of this format by using few effects save reverb and distortion. McBride and Sanchez have great chemistry, providing Metheny an ideal rhythm section for his solos but often taking the fore with their own accomplished individual moments.
