Family: Making you Cringe Since (Your Birthday Here)

Your dad likes polka music and lots of scotch. Your mom has “a thing” for Lorenzo Lamas – a fact she tells everyone whenever wine is served. Your sister left home at 16, pierced her septum and fashioned her hair into liberty spikes. Now she’s an investment banker, a Republican, and a hostess for Botox parties. It would be best if your new girlfriend didn’t meet them right away…

That’s the thing about family: It’s a crazy assemblage of folks that you’re forever tied to, whether you would personally choose them to be or not. High school physics teacher-turned-comedian Steve Solomon not only understands the unifying effect of family commiseration, he’s built a career on it. His previous one-man-show, My Mother’s Italian, My Father’s Jewish, and I’m in Therapy, sold out across the country. Now he’s got a new bank of stories about the same colorful cast of characters in My Sister’s an Only Child. With Solomon channeling voices and dialects from his Brooklyn upbringing, you’ll laugh along with the knowledge that, yes, someone else has been through it, and, no, the embarrassment never actually killed him. This performance runs Thursday through Sunday at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts (201 SW Fifth Ave., Fort Lauderdale), and tickets range $25 to $35.
