You’ve never been to a polo match – but you have spent a lot of time at the racetrack. Well, the two are pretty similar. At the manicured polo grounds, the upper crusts mingle with mint juleps in hand, dressed to the nines in their sherbet-colored sweaters, lightweight and breezy khaki pants, and polished loafers. At the racetrack, disheveled landlord types huddle around dollar beer stands wearing novelty T’s from the ´80s, acid washed jeans, and white tennis shoes with Velcro straps. And both have gambling. I know: the parallels are more shocking than you could ever have imagined.

If you’ve only seen horses earn their alfalfa by running in ovals, try a taste of the finer life at today’s FLIFF fundraiser Fast Ponies and a Fancy Picnic. The affair takes place at the Royal Palm Polo Sports Club (18000 Jog Rd., Boca Raton) and features an elaborate sit-down picnic at noon, an extravagant silent auction, surprise activities throughout the day, all building up to a lively polo match at 3 p.m. $55 gets you the chance to wear the full-linen suit that’s been hanging in your closet for a decade. RSVP by calling 954-760-9898, or visiting www.fliff.com.
