The vernal equinox gets ickily Freudian for neopagans who are serious about their theology, for it is the time when the fast-maturing sun god/grain god/whateverthehell begins dating his mum. They’ll consummate their relationship in May, and enjoy the giddy lives of newlyweds until he croaks at the end of October. Then the bereaved mother/lover will sit around and stew until her little chap comes due on the winter solstice. He’ll mature like a horny progerian, and they’ll start the whole kinky affair once more come March at the Spring equinox. Happily, actual neopagan celebrations seldom involve hot mother-son/sun love. They do involve dancing, potluck-style food ΄n’ booze, funny robes, magic words, and a bunch of people holding hands in a circle and doing their level best to keep expressions of spiritual transport on their faces, when in fact they’re mostly worried about developing sweaty palms. It’s a gay old time, in other words, and it goes down tonight at 7 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Church of South Florida (3970 NW 21 Ave., Oakland Park). Admission is free, but you should bring some libations. Canned goods, too, for the Cooperative Feeding Program of Broward. For info on the folks running the shindig — the MoonPath chapter of CUUPs, the Covenant of Unitarian Universalist Pagans — check out www.moonpathcuups.org.
