Bierbrunnen means "beer well." And when you're talking beer, well, you're probably speaking Deutsch. No, you're not under the bridge in one of Berlin's famed pub crawlers. You're a 30-second walk from Fort Lauderdale's beaches, and you're smack in the middle of Bierbrunnen Pub's loading station (read: bar area). Bierbrunnen, although it's clearly more sports bar than pub, features a bunch of imports plus as a few premium domestic brews. The laid-back atmosphere is fueled by the golden liquid, since few get off their hinterteile long enough to shoot darts or dance. But with the Wade-less, Pat-less, and (practically) win-less Heat on the flat-panel TVs, I can't blame my fellow drunkards for sitting haplessly with their backs to the screen, enjoying the very adequate variety of German beers. Follow the sliding wall outside to the "beer garden," and find a green alternative to the smoky bars you're used to. Be warned, though, it's hot out here. And muggy. If you stay inside, play pool or take your pick on the digital jukebox, but keep away from thrash metal. This mid-30s crowd seems more likely to bob and weave to the Arctic Monkeys than the Eagles or Death Metal. The traditional German fare sounds like it would go down well with a lager (the kitchen closes earlier than the bar). With Spaten Optimater, Franziskaner, Spaten Octoberfest, Bitburger, and Warsteiner readily available for your satisfaction, it's easy to get confused — ask the barkeep for taste samples before you order, then settle into your mug of Bavarian ichors.
