Devon Allman and Honeytribe

Devon Allman and Honeytribe enjoy the great outdoors.

Devon Allman and Honeytribe enjoy the great outdoors.

Yes, his last name is Allman and his band, Honeytribe, plays blues-inflected rock — but as far as Devon Allman is concerned, the comparisons to his dad stop there. The younger Allman grew up listening to blues, metal, and college rock, and he didn't meet his dad, Gregg Allman, until he was 15. While his voice — a gritty, guttural growl — is reminiscent of his old man's, musically Honeytribe is more mainstream jam-band in the vein of the Black Crowes and Dave Matthews. Founded in St. Louis in 2001, Honeytribe has toured for the past year and a half in support of their 2006 release, Torch, a solid collection of jam rock tunes that have helped the band gain a sizeable following around the world. Drummer Mark Oyarzabal, pianist Jack Kirkner, and piano player George Potsos round out the tribe, who shine on standout songs "When I Call Home" and the soulful "Heaven Has No Mercy."
