Dress For Success

Ah, weddings: The most romantic and memorable time in a woman’s life. Except, you know, all the planning. All the freaking out over minute details; the fastidious attention to everything from too much pesticide in the flower arrangements to whether his sister will eat the salmon if she finds out it’s farm-raised. What a nightmare. Well, at least she’s got her dress. If all else fails — if the chapel burns down or the entire groom’s side gets food poisoning — at least she’ll look stunning in that gown.

Choosing that perfect gown? That’s another story. For the women in Stephanie Allison Walker’s Three Fittings, it proves to be just as daunting a task. One bride was hasty, so she’s stuck with a dress that she might not want to spend the rest of her ceremony with. (Uh oh, Batman, it’s the metaphor signal!) A second is a bit of a rebel — she finds dresses to be oppressive tools of the patriarchy. The last bride-to-be knows that it’s not about the dress at all. What is she thinking?
