New Wave Phenomenology
What might an intrepid trekkie or oddball music fan — the type that yearns for the reactivation of Man… or Astroman? — do on a hot Saturday night? What else but go investigate the circus-like, pro-science environment of Saturday’s Phenomenauts show, happening at City Limits (19 NE 3rd Ave., Delray Beach) with the AKA’s, Maldroid, Pots ‘n’ Pans and local psychobilly faves the Van Orsdels? It would be too easy to describe the Phenomenauts as a gene splicing experiment among nerdy Devo fans, kids who watched the original Battlestar Galactica series till their eyes bled, and a Reverend Horton heat enthusiast — so we won’t go there. Beyond the band’s engaging visual elements, like its snappy space commander uniforms, lab coats, fancy galaxy glasses, and a really, really awesome wearable Theremin (yes, it’s true!), lies an element of musical fun and hijinks.
