First You Get the Money, Then You Get the Power,

Then you get ze Jews!

Here’s a lesser-known story about those tyrannical, no-good Nazis: In the late 1930s, they planned to bankrupt the English economy by flooding the market with counterfeit cash. Their mastermind? Well, in director Stefan Ruzowitzky's Oscar-winning The Counterfeiters, it’s a wormy, boney-cheeked criminal who just happens to be Jewish. Funny money forger Salomon “Sally” Sorowitsch (Karl Markovics) is arrested for fraud, shipped off to a concentration camp with other prisoners, and forced at gunpoint to counterfeit the British pound. The top-secret scheme, dubbed “Operation Bernhard,” works, too — Sally’s that sort of ambiguous, Bogart-esque good guy who digs the artistic challenge of forging flawless currency. Of course, that’s until he realizes his douche baggery is actually helping the Nazis win the war. This gripping survival drama screens Sunday at 5 p.m. at Cinema Paradiso (503 SE Sixth St., Fort Lauderdale). Tickets cost $5 to $8. Call 954-525-3456, or visit www.fliff.com.
