Keepin’ the Low End Down

You’ve got to hand it to the folks behind the Art of Moving Butts: The hip-hop party lasted a helluva long time at the Poorhouse, of all places, and it brought some respectability to Broward’s dismal hip-hop scene in the process. But nothing good lasts forever, and after expanding to some nights at Revolution, AMB stopped rockin’ late last year. Now, Paul Gnu, the transported Brooklynite behind the night, is throwing down the old school hip-hop gauntlet yet again, this time at Jazziz Bistro (at Seminole Paradise, 5751 Seminole Way, Hollywood). His new party is Weekly Relief, a Sunday-night get-together where local DJs and emcees settle into classic hip-hop, funk, and soul — basically the kind of underground stuff you’ll never hear on the airwaves in SoFla. But it’s not an insular sort of gig — Gnu and company keeps the jams groovy and listenable in addition to inviting guest acts in. This Sunday marks Hip-Hop Appreciation Week, and local favorites Major League, DJ Immortal, and Stevie D “The Dick Clark of Hip-Hop” will be performing. Next week (and the last Sunday of every month), Butta Verses holds court. The shindig kicks off at 9 p.m. No cover. Call 954-583-8335.
