Bull Bar

By Bryan Falla

Published on May 22, 2008

School's out, but this college crowd is going nowhere. It could be the gas prices, but from the looks of it, it's the need to consort with schoolmates that keeps these collegians at the Bull Bar. The name pays homage to the bull dolphin — you'll know it by the hyperdeveloped frontal lobe and the blue and yellow candy coat. The interior pays tribute to a maritime culture of long ago when boats were still made from the stuff that comes from trees — wood; there's lots of it here — and sailors were known for their antics (and their drinking ways). No need to dress up, cap'n; jeans and T-shirts will get you in the door, though you might want to hang outside a bit. It is freaking packed in here. The barroom is about as wide as my wallet — and about as long as the line of creditors waiting for me to pay up. Don't worry about me. I got alcohol to ease my troubles. Conveniently, the Bull's got a full liquor bar at my disposal. The live music helps too. Local acoustic and rock acts like 3Thirty3, Panic Disorder, Taylor Road, William Schere, Adam Fine, and Henri Lemaire take the stage regularly. On Sundays and Mondays, Bull Bar pulls out the Monopoly, Life, and Scrabble boxes for game nights. Sunday is also in-the-biz night (so is Tuesday): 20 percent off the tab. Then Friday comes, and happy hour begins at 5:30 p.m. No matter what day of the week it is, Bull Bar is the perfect place to forget about all of your b.s.
