Oh No, They Say He’s Got to Go

There are two kinds of people in this world: those who liked Godzilla better as Tokyo’s radioactive harbinger of destruction, and those who liked him better when he became a cuddly defender of humanity against giant robots, space monsters, and mutated bugs. We’re not going to levy judgment on either group, but we will say this: Godzilla’s victory dance was always cooler when humans were cheering him on.

Come out tonight to Undergrounds Coffeehaus (2743 E. Oakland Park Blvd., Fort Lauderdale) for their Monster Movie Night, and you’ll not only catch the seminal, friendly G-dude flick, Godzilla vs. Megalon, but also two other movies that will please folks who like their big bads a bit scarier. The Host, a 2006 flick about a mutated amphibious monster resulting from government dumping in the water supply, is South Korea’s top grossing movie of all time. It’s bloody and a bit twisted and Lord of the Ringsvisual artists WETA Workshop did the effects, so you know the monster looks cool. Cloverfield will also play, so if you missed J.J. Abram’s take on the monster genre in the theaters, now’s your chance to see it for free. Yes, free, as in no cover all night. You want popcorn too? A bottomless bag of the extra-buttery stuff will run you just $2. The fun starts at 7 p.m., and guests are encouraged to dress in monster garb and bring their own beanbag chairs for comfortable enjoyment. You can also peruse Undergrounds’ fine selection of paperbacks, on sale for just $1 each or 5 for $4 throughout the evening. Call 954-630-1900, or visit www.undergroundscoffeehaus.com.
