Deadly 18th Century Love Triangles

The Sorrows of Young Werther has come a long way since Goethe published it in the late 18th century. It was the novel that turned Goethe into an international celebrity. Napoleon carried a copy with him on military campaigns; it was stolen, ominously, just as his army reached the outskirts of Moscow. Tonight, it’s presented in a staged version at the Miami Light Project (3000 Biscayne Blvd., Ste. 100, Miami, FL). Director Jesus Quintero and his peripatetic theatre troupe have woven film projections and interpretive dances into their adaptation of the classic text. This version ran once before in South Florida, and reviewers received it warmly.

The Sorrows of Young Wertheris the story of a young man, Werther, caught up in a devastating love-triangle. Lotte, his obsession, is a young woman engaged irretrievably to an older man. The book was so overwhelming to some 18th century readers that thousands are rumored to have committed suicide in reaction. If you’re struggling with unrequited love, skip this one.
