Miami FC takes on Puerto Rico to finally settle this “self-governing” business

The Miami FC has moved up to fifth place in the United Soccer League standings, thanks mostly to some stellar defensive play, which helped the Blues ride an impressive five-game shutout streak during the month of June. And while they managed to win only one game during that streak (a freakish string of 0-0 ties), much needed points were collected. Meanwhile, striker Alex Afonso continued to treat opposing teams’ goalkeepers like Ned Beatty with his league-leading seven goals. The shutout streak ended at the hands of first place Vancouver Whitecaps, but the Blues still managed to finish the game with a 1-1 draw, keeping Miami undefeated during that stretch — and that was with most of Miami’s stars riding the bench. Not too shabby.

Tonight, the Blues will once again look to display their stifling defense. And while one would prefer to see them play against an international foe on Independence Day, say Vancouver or Montreal (that’s right, Canada, we’re not through with you yet), the Blues will face the last place Puerto Rican Islanders. At least it should be an easy win. Game time is 8 p.m. at Tropical Park Stadium (7900 Bird Rd., Miami). Tickets run $10 to $25. Call 305-728-2612, or visit www.miamifc.com.
