Timmy Don’t Just Surf

It’s not often that sporting enthusiasts have the opportunity to learn from the pros firsthand, but Tuesday at Island Water Sports (1985 NE Second St., Deerfield Beach), they will. Starting at 8 a.m., IWS will host Rip My Shred Stick, a full day of hands-on instruction with some of surfing’s top pros. Attending: Hurley surfers Rob Machado, better known as Mr. Smoothy because of his liquid style; Pat O’Connell, a former champ and star of The Endless Summer II; and Timmy Curran, spokesman for the Surfrider Foundation and now an acoustic musician. The instruction is limited to young surfers — gnarly dudes and dudettes under 16 only — but everyone’s welcome to come hang ten. Plus, IWS will be cooking up free barbequed grub for parents to enjoy while their kids hit the waves. Registration is required, so sign up in the store or online at www.hurley.com/rmss.

Stick around after the shredding for a concert by surfer Timmy Curran. At 8:30 p.m., after the shop’s officially closed, he’ll set up a makeshift stage and jam the night away. Timmy does the sort of stuff you might expect from a Christian surfer: Soulful tunes featuring just a softly strummed acoustic guitar and his dreamy voice. He’s touring in support of his new CD, Word of Mouth, and will be sticking around afterwards to chill with fans. Tickets cost $10.
