Youve been trying to beat Through the Fire and Flames on expert mode in Guitar Hero III for months now, but to no avail. The riffs, theyre just too wicked. The speed, too uncompromising. Youve watched the YouTube videos of 12-year-old kids matching every arpeggiated note flawlessly, but you cant seem to approach that level of manual dexterity. The only thing you can do: Learn firsthand from the axe-wielding masters of Dragonforce themselves, Herman Li and Sam Totman, when the Worlds Number One power metal band comes to town tonight as part of the Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival.
Not familiar with Dragonforce?Their brand of machine-gun speed metal is something like what youd get if Iron Maiden sat down for a game of Dungeons & Dragons with members of Helloween. Their songs are furiously fast ballads full of intertwining guitars, keyboards, fantasy-based lyrics, and video game sound effects (which Li recreates in really cool ways via his guitar), a combination thats made the band insanely popular among the geekish set, but not so much among traditional metal fans. If you fall into the latter category, you may still want to check out the all-day metal fest beginning at 2 p.m. at Cruzan Amphitheatre (601-7 Sansburys Way, West Palm Beach) because Slipknot, Disturbed, Mastodon, Underoath, and Black Tide will all be there to put the rock in Rockstar. Tickets cost $29 to $54. Visit www.mayhemfest.com.
