Shak Attack

Shahruck Dhanji's campaign for Broward sheriff is suddenly mired in sticky money problems

The sheriff's candidate called "Shak" says he wants to bring everyone closer together in Broward County.

But so far, Shahruck Dhanji, the first Muslim to run for the office, hasn't even been able to keep together his own political machine, which recently broke down into a sea of allegations that has sparked an ongoing investigation by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.

Two of his former top aides — onetime Pembroke Park Vice Mayor Norm Price and Democratic Executive Committee member Nadezda Martinez — have abandoned ship, aiming a salvo of allegations at Dhanji about financial improprieties. The two charge that the candidate, in violation of state law, paid them for their campaign work through a nonprofit organization and his own private business.

Price says also that he was ordered to give one of Dhanji's most influential supporters, Plantation Democratic Club President Bill Kling, a check for $500 that was never disclosed in campaign filings. The implication, of course, is that Dhanji was buying Kling's influence among voters.

The allegations, if true, not only shine a light on the seamy underside of local party politics but could also be counted as criminal campaign violations. And they have left the 41-year-old Dhanji fighting for his reputation, his political life, and his freedom.

Wearing a dark suit and a flag pin, Dhanji told me last week in his Pompano Beach office that he's done nothing wrong. He said he believes he's being ambushed by political rivals and feels that he is being "symbolically raped."

"I sit before you today telling you square in the eyes that I have crossed no lines...," he said. "This nonsense will stop as I ascend to the position that I seek."

Dhanji, though he has no law enforcement experience, isn't a lightweight. He's an entrepreneur who has handled millions of dollars in investments and run a number of companies that engage in a wide range of businesses, from property management to mortgages to restaurants.

He was born in India and grew up mostly in Broward County. A polished speaker and family man with two daughters, he has at times outshined his opponents at campaign events.

He said the "nonsense" is politically motivated and won't keep him from beating challengers Scott Israel, Richard Lemack, Wiley Thompson, and Bruce Udolf in the Democratic primary. The winner of the next month's primary will square off against current Sheriff Al Lamberti, the only Republican candidate, in November.

It's true that rival camps have been spreading word about Dhanji's alleged misdeeds. But it seems apparent that Dhanji has made some large missteps in his campaign — and the $500 payment made to Kling seems the most serious allegation.

That charge comes from Price, a campaign adviser until the two men parted ways in January. Price, a former police officer who recently retired from a management job at the office of the Supervisor of Elections, says Dhanji told him to make the payment to Kling on November 21 of last year at a Broward Democratic Party meeting at the Deicke Auditorium in Plantation.

"Shak said he didn't have any checks on him and asked me to write a check for $500 to him," he says. "I wrote the check and gave it to Kling and the next day was reimbursed the $500 by Shak."

When reached on his cell phone, Kling was defensive and evasive.

"I don't want to talk about any money, and I don't know about any money," he said before ending the call.

Price, however, says that he has the original check made out to Kling and that his bank records show he deposited $500 in his Florida Capital Bank account the next day.

Dhanji, for his part, says he has no memory of any of it.

"I don't recall that ever happening," Dhanji says of the payment. "Nothing got done with my authorization. I don't know about anything like that, but I certainly didn't do it, nor did I tell anybody to do it."

"He's lying," Price says. "Why in God's name would I give Bill Kling $500 unless Dhanji told me to do so? I have no reason to do that. If there is a trial, I won't mind taking the stand."

The dispute doesn't bode well for Dhanji, who had counted Price as one of his most trusted advisers. "I used my name to get a lot of people to support him — which I totally regret now," Price says.

The two men met late last summer at a political event. Price says he negotiated a $750-a-week salary from Dhanji to work on the campaign. His job: introduce the candidate to various political groups and at times speak on his behalf. But Price says that he was rarely paid and that when he was, it wasn't from a campaign fund but from a nonprofit organization called the Human Relations Council of Florida.

Dhanji founded the council in December 2006 as part of what he says is his mission to end prejudice and discrimination. The council has been give official status by the state's Commission on Human Rights, a board on which Dhanji sits after being appointed in 2005 by then-Gov. Jeb Bush.

Just to remind residence in Broward County: "What a joke, this guy cannot not even run a small business nevermind an office that has about $750 million in it's budget. Look into Mr. Dhanji's business such as Revell Oil, Tiger Petroleum, Counterbalance Investments, American Escrow and title and Alliance Escrow and Title, Antrium Mortgage. These are just a few to look into to discover fraud and other poor business decisions. This man has no integrity and has no concept of the word integrity. He can be bought and he is always for sale. If should ever get elected, we will wish that Ken Jenne was back in office. Check Mr. Dhanji's property taxes for his home in Coconut Creek, I wonder if he has paid them yet? The investors in his Capital Meadows deal have all had their credit ruined because of his lack of payment s to the mortgage companies. He also is being sued almost daily from the tenants because he cannot pay their security deposits back to them when their lease is up because he has no money in the escrow account because he used all the security deposit money to pay his closing costs to complete the deal (he had no cash to close). This guy has no morales and will lie right to your face then give you a check that he knows will bounce. The best part is that he will blame someone else for the problems he creates. In a recent article published in the Forum Coconut Creek, Frank Pumilla makes a statement that this man is the most compassionate man he has ever met, well Frank if he shouls ever get elected he will not even rember who you are! Watch your back, Mr. Dhanji has no problem sticking a knife in it. On his website he states he is a man of Honesty and Integrity, that is the biggest lie of all. Broward County beware and reporters please look into his finances and business dealings as you will discover none of them are honest or legit."

Are you people serious? This guy is a clown! A free look in public records will show you that this numb nuts can't even pay his mortgage. A person can get dizzy just counting the number of foreclosed attempts on his property in Coconut Creek. This guy hasn't had problems because of the economic down turn. This guy hasn't been able to pay his mortgage for years before the recent economic downturn. Does Broward County really want a guy that hasn't been able to pay his mortgage in years to run for Sheriff?

Comment five: you have just hit the tip of the iceberg. You are right on track with your comments. He has screwed over so many people including myself and has placed me in a financial mess. This guy is a joke, I like how he states in the article the he is going to ascend to his rightful position, "You have the right to remain silent....." He has taken advantage of so many people who actually wanted to do honest business with him. Just ask all of the investors in his Tallahassee deal "Capitol Meadows" he has defaulted on all of the mortgages, so all of the investors are about to be foreclosed on if they have not covered their past due fees. Counterbalance Investments were to pay each of the mortgages. He blamed HG for all of the problems with the account, maybe he should have not used the money to pay his own bills. As for his money for his campaign, lets just say it is quite interesting on how he raised the funds.... he went into business with people reinstated administratively dissolved companies then had the other people go to the bank open lines of credit for the business and then he drained the accounts without their knowledge..... Somebody should ask him about his gas stations in tallahassee... does he actually own them? He has been claiming that he does? He has scammed someone out of bunch of money who tried to buy the stations, they got to closing and title was not clear, the earnest money was never returned to the purchaser?????? His credentials are false, he had a friend who helped him get the honorary title, then he took his 50K donation to the HRC. The HRC never received the funds... where did they go????? He has screwed everyone that has tried to help him, he promises the world, uses them and then hangs them out to dry. Heck he even bounced the check to buy the furniture in his office that he was evicted from. People beware.

Your a hoax and a criminal. All the bad checks to Ted Sahagian and Melon Bank. The fraud loan you received under Ted Tittmans name. All the people you didnt pay. The fake raffles for the Human Relations Commission that you and Simms were involved in. Your fake credentials. You didnt have secret clearance in the Naval Reserve and you were never with the Seagate Police Dept. I have the proof and it will be in the next article if you are not in jail by then. How about that quit claim you put in the closing papers and ripped that poor guy off and he had to sue you in a Quiet Title action. Norm Price is a good man that you screwed over. You are a criminal and it will come out.How aout your recent evicition from your campaign headquarters and you claim your a business man. Your a joke.

Washed up drunk??????? Good try but for the record I don't drink any alcohoic drinks unless you want to count Manishevitz wine for the holidays and I have been away from his office for over 5 months so why would I want to stay on his board? My advice to you is get your facts straight. I am a honest person who was open and honest in my comments and have always been honest and open in my comments

Mr. Dhanji has it wrong. It is his lapse of memory. everything you have read from Mr. Price is exactly on target. Ms. Martinez is also correct with her statments. I have personal knowledge of Mr. Dhanji business relationships and shall we say his knack for writing bad checks. Just do a simple records search at the Clerk of courts on Mr. Dhanji and see how many court actions have been filed against him. There are one or two that are still open. These are not personal attacks from disgruntled people, these statments are from people who believed the BS that he fed them. I fell for his antics and still have not been paid for services that I performed for him and was actually supposed to be paid. It was in my best interest to get as far away from this man as possible before taking the fall for his skeptical business practices. Mr. Price's statments are exactly on the mark. not one word that he stated is incorrect. There have been several people who have tried to work with Mr. Dhanji that have been taken advantage of and are now suffering financially because of his dealings. Mr. Dhanji is smart enough to insulate himself with a third person, so that if there is trouble he can shield himself and blame the other person. When all is said and done the FDLE will have enough evidence on this man to build a solid case. The closest he will come to being sheriff may be in the cell next to Ken Jenne. It is sad that Mr. Dhanji is still trying to gain the people's trust. If they vote for him, they will find out how disappointed the will be in him.

What do you expect from Norm Price, a washed up alcoholic who can't manage his own affairs, who won't resign from the council. Norm is being paid by the Scott Israel team, and so is Martinez. You can do better than that Bob...

  • voter 07/23/2008 11:06:00 PM

Check his first filing the only money he raised was used to pay himself back with interest. So much for self-confidence. This guy is a major league con-man
