Rock the Bells Festival

They’re Big on Myspace

In the younger days of hip-hop, unknown artists tried to spread their music with nothing more then a trunk full of cassette tapes and mix CDs, hoping that in time, fortune and bling would come raining down on them. Now, up-and-coming acts don’t even need to leave the comfort of their own keyboard to earn respect. Blogs and other music sites have become the new proving ground for young musicians trying to generate interest on the streets, and your iPod.

Take Chicago based duo The Cool Kids, for example (see our full in Music). They may be one of the newer acts at the Rock The Bells Festival, but they are also one of the most blogged and buzzed about groups today. By streaming the old school throwback EP, The Bake Sale on Myspace, their ’80s rap revival has won critical acclaim, even catching the attention of Rolling Stone, who called them the “next great hip-hop duo.”

Shut down your desktop, and come see The Cool Kids perform with many other hip-hop legends at Bayfront Park (301 N. Biscayne Blvd., Miami) this Saturday at noon. You can even post concert pics on your FaceBook profile afterwards; I’m sure they won’t mind the exposure. Tickets cost $55. Visit www.ticketmaster.com.
