These Are the People in Your Neighborhood

He wasn’t in a basket. There was no stork in sight. And yet Logan, the Dixie Dingo puppy, arrived on the steps of Miami’s Dorsch Gallery (151 NW 24th St., Wynwood). All involved parties immediately recognized that Logan was home. Five years have passed since these strangers were introduced, and in that time something… odd, happened. They’ve begun commemorating the date by paying it forward via the Dixie Dingo Super-8 Invitational Film Festival.

The biennial event plays out like this: the Festival’s organizers travel around with eight Super-Eight cameras, as they encounter strangers who might make nice candidates, they give them each a camera and invite them to make a short home movie. The eight strangers who accept do just that, capturing their unique lives and experiences onto a delightfully gritty reel of film. The only editing is done by Miami’s own Clifton Childree who prepares opening and closing credits for each of the works; nobody else is allowed to view them until the screening begins at 8 p.m. Celebrate the magic that transpires when strangers merge this evening – I mean, if a dog can do it, why can’t you? The festival is free but make a donation, it will go Faktura Pet Project an organization that helps other lost pups find homes. Visit www.dorschgallery.com, or call 305-576-1278.
