Keep the Bench Warm

"Royal Flushed" (Michael J. Mooney, August 7) points out some good facts, but it's way over-the-top on glamorizing playing poker for a living. Anyone who claims he plays poker for a living in Florida is a wannabe, a jerkoff, and a degenerate.  It's impossible to sustain a high standard of living on a game with a maximum buy-in of only $100.

The best players in this town are not the self-proclaimed pros. They are the doctors, lawyers, professors, CPAs, and global businessmen who would never consider themselves "poker pros" out of shear embarrassment to their respective professions. Of course, everyone preys upon the tourist who enters the casino with a fixed amount he's willing to lose. I will say this: Things are going to get very ugly when the "buy-in" limits in Florida are raised. That will separate the men from the boys. Donkeys willing to risk their short stack of $100 preflop will have to think twice when the bet is $500, $1,000, or more.  Self-proclaimed pros used to sleeping in their cars better get used to streets and park benches.

For the good, solid players, we can't wait for that day. It will be the day of retribution.

Dark Knight

Thank you for your article on the Paul and Young Ron Show ("The Paul and Young Ron Experience," Michael J. Mooney, July 31). There were only two mistakes I could find. One, the ratings numbers — no doubt supplied to you by the very salesperson who was recently fired for lying, stealing, and public sexual exposure — were considerably lower than recent or even average Paul and Young Ron numbers. But who cares? The point is, people listen. The other mistake was the reporter's failure to mention Young Ron's alter ego, Super Young Ron, who has been sentinel along the cities' skylines for years now, fighting crime, stopping injustices, and settling arguments and/or domestic disputes in the name of peace, harmony, and justice. No offense, but funny is one thing; hero is quite another. Still, thanks for pointing us out. We'll read New Times from now on. Promise.

Gettin' It Right

The game is called Shoots and Ladders, not Snakes and Ladders ("Heartwarming Story," Tailpipe, July 31). If you're gonna be a smart ass, at least be an accurate smart ass.

Editor's note: Thanks. That would be Chutes and Ladders, sometimes known as Snakes and Ladders. Google it.

Glory Comes Cheap

I wonder if Griselda Blanco gets a pass into heaven as a born-again Christian ("Surviving the Black Widow," Amy Guthrie, July 24). Considering she's "allegedly" responsible for 200-plus deaths? I want to know how Charles Cosby didn't just royally screw himself by participating in this documentary — either by the wrong people now knowing where he and his family reside or as an obvious confession for authorities to use against him. Statute of limitations?

Besides dealing crack and coke, which is almost certainly used to make crack, he came off in the doc as a decent human being. Kinda makes you sick at your stomach if you think about it — we humans pick some sick meat puppets to glorify sometimes.

More Shak Attack

You have just hit the tip of the iceberg ("Shak Attack," Bob Norman, July 24), though you are right on track with your comments. [Sheriff's candidate Shak Dhanji] has screwed over so many people including myself and has placed me in a financial mess. This guy is a joke. I like how he states in the article that he is going to ascend to his rightful position: "You have the right to remain silent..." He has taken advantage of so many people who actually wanted to do honest business with him. Just ask all of the investors.

Giveaway

Bob Norman's piece regarding the Charlie Crist Big Sugar deal was right on the mark ("Sugar Daddy," July 17). There is another Charlie giveaway in the works that makes me question the economic skills of our governor. This involves the sale (through a lease) of Alligator Alley to private investors. South Florida motorists and truckers are about to be screwed big-time if we don't stop it. Keep up your take-no-prisoners approach to journalism.

Shak Dhanji, should rot in hell, he ruined my family and my financial life. I am young in my profession and he made it very hard for me to move forward in my affairs. I am on board when it comes to brining him down in flames, he thinks he can get away with lying to people to get what he wants. there are too many people that he has done this too,for him to become head of broward police. If anyone wants to go ahead with teaming up to bring him down, there is a way and I know it...i will be checking this site every so often

August 10, 2008 Doug Lyons Sun-Sentinel Editorial Board 300 E. Las Olas Blvd Fort Lauderdale, FL 33301 Dear Mr. Doug Lyons and the Sun-Sentinel Editorial Board: In reading the Sun-Sentinel newspaper article on August 10, 2008 regarding the endorsement of Mr. Kenneth Thurston, a candidate for Florida State House, District 94. The Sun-Sentinel newspaper brought back old memories to me when I first ranned in 1990 for Dade County Clerk of the Circuit and County Courts. At first all the candidates pictures was listed in the Miami Herald when I first ranned and 3 days before the election in a highly contested race where black people turned the vote 85% my picture was left out of the newspaper. This caused a disruption in my race and the only 2 people who spoke out for me was Reverend Richard Dunn and Bishop Victor T. Curry of the New Birth MBC. This deliberate error cost me the race as a grass-root candidate having my picture in the paper would have probably made me the first African American in Florida's history to become Dade County first black Clerk of the Courts. Therefore, I was very sadden to see the Sun-Sentinel repeating history and it have aligned itself with the politics in Broward County that have beaten down the black community for years with recommendations of these so called elected officials who care nothing for the black community and will serve either greed or those constituents who can pay them a dollar. The difference is I would rather see Roshana Banks in the seat if it wasn't I because as a newcomer to the electoral process she would have been trainable and more willing to do the right thing. Mr. Thurston is a sales man who give excellent presentations, but he is scripted by a white firm known as the Patrotriac Games and they don't come cheap just ask Christopher Smith who also is contracted with them as well. As I stated I have more experience than any candidate in my race, and the Sun-Sentinel Editorial Board knows this because my record speaks for itself. It also knows that I am not perfect because when I served in the military the unjust death of my brother a Sgt. David A. Young in a racist placed known as Killeen, Texas helped with my decision to depart which I would have served 20 years. In addition, it also knows that when I served with Rep. Jim Burke before his trouble I worked for the State of Florida diligently as a Legislative Assistant II during reapproportionment in 1991, both Congressman Alcee Hastings, Congresswoman Carrie Meeks, Senator Jim Scott, Senator Howard Foreman, Senator Mandy Dawson, and House Representative Matthew Meadows District legislative assistant knows this to be true. The endorsement of Mr. Thurston also have sadden me because your news paper has slander and defame my service and it has mischaracterized those facts which are pertinent to the voters which leads decent and honest voters looking for change down the path of il will and despair like it did against Barack Obama. Your endorsement of Mr. Thurston also saddens me because at first he didn't even want the job until me and his Nephew Perry Thurston got into a phone debate during a telephone conference last year regarding the Status of Black Men and Black Boys. It didn't go well and the next thing I saw happening is that his Nephew Perry Thurston put him into this race or so the rumor says. The other thing I dont believe that Mr. Thurston, Chris Smith and Perry Thurston who run as a team cares about the black community at large and if they are elected they will in my opinion promote the status quo and control needed necessary votes in the state that black people need to promote jobs, healthcare, state funding and CRA in district 94, 92 and 29. In other words they will become some powerful African Americans and lobbyist and others will beat down their doors for short term gain which is only my opinion. Why hell don't make any of them mad with you they may not give you a job or recommendation, no matter what the paper says Chris Smith when he served in the house he didn't get one thing of significant passed in Tallahassee and he cut many people out of a district that needed black leadership at the time. His record show that hardly any bills passed and Chris Smith, Perry Thurston and Kenneth Thurston as history reflects will join together as a team and become a member of this wonderful social club called the Florida Legislature doing all the same. I believe in my mind that they will tie up this district in ways unseen and unheard of because their commitment to service only promotes themselves and more of the same. To endorse people solely on the basis of a name or political machinery in my opinion is highly unfair and to reduce people like myself by never stating to voters only on a blog that I ran for President of the United States, I'm a former candidate for Dade County Clerk and the first African American to seek the position since its creation, I am President of the first leadership development organization in the country called Blacks Organizing Leadership Development, (BOLD), a former member of AFSCME Union, NAACP, SCLC, a distant member of Church of the Open Doors, I served in the United States Army Headquarters (MDW) and I am President of the Black Community Inc. of America is very disrespectful to me. Mr. Thurston has never demonstrated the kind of commitment as I have and I believe that your paper attempt to sway or influence voters and it sought to minimize or destroy any chances of my ever running again in Broward County. I also believe because of the inference the paper gave to voters it inferred why should we vote for a person who doesn't live here, at first the paper reported that I lived in Coral Gables and now I live in Homestead Florida which is dishonest and very unethical. It is true my family life begin in those cities in which I am proud because my family are both Haitian and Bahamian descendants and in 1896 the Rolles, the Fergusons, the Gibsons, the Poitiers, the McKenzies, and the Adderley's migrated in those places looking for change. Even, the late great Father Theodore Gibson a former commissioner of the City of Miami is a part of me and it was my family that signed off the charter in 1896 to help incorporate the City of Miami and create all the counties. Mr. Thurston isn't the only candidate with a name, my family helped to build Dade, Broward and Palm Beach County and this happen long before Mr. Thurston's family decided to add their contributions to the great State of Florida. Therefore, I am requesting that you reflect the truth in where I live I am a resident of Broward County where I now live in Coral Springs, I have been a resident of the district from 1993 after Hurricane Andrews and I moved to Huntsville Alabama in December of 1996 and returned back to the district in 2005 upon completing a executive bachelor degree from Faulkner University. Another fact distorted Mr. Thurston does not own a property management firm as the Sun-Sentinel newspaper has inaccurately reported and he works as a property manager which does not qualify him to be a State Representative. Respectfully, Mr. Thurston has quietly over the last 30 years sat in his real estate brokerage office tending to his personal affairs and caring for his lovely family while community activist and soldiers like me put their lives on the front lines of the black community. I have spent a life time calling for the enforcement of the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964, 1967, 1972, 1978 and the Community Service Act of 1974 and never have I seen Mr. Thurston on the battlefield. Respectfully, I know of no instance where Mr. Thurston have been in the newspaper for giving of himself to his community in away that benefits blacks, Hispanics, whites, and Caribbeans. Secondly, in seeking the position for State House District 94, in my 47 years I have never seen the kind of disrespect by homeowner's associations, political clubs and culturally diverse communities against a good man offering himself to public service. As a citizen I have a constitutional right to pursue life, liberty and happiness and I have a right to freedom of speech during my candidacy which have been denied and refused. This meaning in retrospect to add insult to injury your endorsement of Mr. Thurston over other more qualified candidates like a Hazel Rogers, an Eric Hammer, a Robert Lynch and new comer Roshana Banks is wrong and unfair. It is highly disrespectful to only referred to me a man known all over the United States by Presidents, Governors, National Organizations, US Senators and Congressmen is a sad commentary that this state history will speak about when nothing get done for black people in this district. Your editorial board interviewed me and it knows that I live in Broward County and it is very dishonest for it to attempt to damage my campaign by diswaying voters from voting for me on Election Day. Mr. Thurston, can not stand in my shoes with all the community service and organizing I have done for free and being an economic major does not make you the most qualified because nothing he have done over the years impacted on the greatness of humanity, as a Rubin Young. You all know who I am and I know that with the powers of the Freedom of Speech clause in the United States Constitution the Sun-Sentinel can destroy me with words and make life for me in Broward county bad, however I will live and die for the cause and respectfully I request that you please make a correction in your newspaper regarding me or we will test the Sun-Sentinel will against the will of the people living in the black community all around the United States. Sincerely, Rubin Young Candidate for Florida House, District 94 Cc: National Newspaper
