The Wackness is Way Dope

Are you yearning for the trappings of yesteryear? Wu-tang and KRS — 1? Bangs teased to the limit of hair product capabilities? How about Gandhi taking bong rips? Well, if any of that suits your fancy, The Wackness might just be your bag of grass. This comedy flick follows teenage pot dealer Luke Shapiro, played by Josh Peck, swaying to the beat of hip hop’s golden age: mid-’90s New York.

Sir Ben Kingsley plays Luke’s weed-bartering psychotherapist and guides him through his final summer before college. Things get complicated when Luke finds himself smitten with Sir Ben’s daughter, played by Olivia Thirlby. This ’90s throwback is part of the 23rd Annual Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival, and it screens Sunday at Cinema Paradiso (503 SE Sixth St., Fort Lauderdale). Tickets cost nine bucks, with show times at 2, 4, and 6 p.m. Call 954-525-FILM (3456), or visit www.fliff.com.
