From the Closet to the Stage

If a gay octogenarian pulled the “When I was your age” card today, it might include events like blackmail by the U.S. State Department in the 1950’s, police raids at the local watering hole, and the very act of ‘coming out’ ensuring you a trip to the family psychologist. Thankfully, friends of Dorothy, times have changed for the better.

In Terrence McNally’s play, Some Men, at Rising Action Theatre (840 E. Oakland Park Blvd., Fort Lauderdale), the stories shared by gay men over the last 80 years unfold while its central characters attend a single gender wedding. The ceremony itself was something that the now-married 68-year-old playwright says he couldn’t have imagined as a young gay man. Tonight’s showing is at 8 p.m. Tickets range from $30 to $58, with a dinner package at Primavera restaurant included in the later. Call 800-595-4849, or visit www.risingactiontheatre.com.
Thursdays-Sundays. Starts: Oct. 3. Continues through Nov. 2, 2008
