What’s this? Your step is suddenly lighter than it was before, converting your walk into something of a bounce. You find yourself whistling polka tunes uncontrollably as you rhythmically dance along the sidewalk, and you have the unexpected urge to don green suspenders on lederhosen. You can feel it in the air — it’s time for Oktoberfest!

Yes, Germany’s single greatest contribution to humanity (just edging out Albert Einstein, dachshunds, and Rammstein) is a celebration of everything you hold dear: cased meat, funny hats, billowing oompah music, and lots and lots (and lots) of beer. And today, the city of Oakland Park will be holding its annual Oktoberfest celebration in Jaco Pastorius Park (at the corner of Dixie Highway and NE 38th Street in Oakland Park). Starting at 11 a.m., a procession of musicians, dancers, and a horse-drawn carriage will make its way from City Hall to the park’s Bavarian Village, where the Official Keg Tapping will take place. And then, it’s on. There will be copious dancing, an Alpine market with gifts and collectables, a carnival full of games and rides, and music courtesy of bands like the Swinging Bavarians. And who could forget the customary Biergarten, filled with bratwurst, roasted pork, sauerkraut, strudel, and all manner of delicious German food courtesy of the Ambry Restaurant?
