Bill Kreutzmann Trio

A jam-band summit of sorts, this trio brings together drummer and Grateful Dead alum Bill Kreutzmann, former Aquarium Rescue Unit/Allman Brothers bassist and Peacemakers bandleader Oteil Burbridge, and guitarist Scott Murawski of Max Creek. Although cross-pollination among bands has been the hallmark of the scene that all three players hail from, the fact that they came together in this specific configuration just this year promises some fresh possibilities. Kreutzmann put his stamp on the Grateful Dead's sound as the integral foil to Mickey Hart in the band's double-drummer setup, so he's no stranger to working with shifting colors, moods, and textures. Murawski brings shades of Max Creek's oft-overlooked sound, which had a direct influence on bands like Phish and has been a jam institution for nearly as long as the Dead. The interplay between these two improvisational veterans and the merging of their parallel backgrounds would appear to be the main draw here. But Burbridge brings the wild-card element with his broad scope. Though he came onto the scene more than two decades before his bandmates, he has arguably contributed just as much. He can also capture the vibe of jazz, soul, funk, and gospel with stunning authenticity. Seeing these three ace musicians on stage playing in harmony is a show that should not be missed.
