SoFla Represent!

Support your favorite local indie shops at the Fun Fair.

We don’t know if you’ve heard this or not, but the economy, man … it’s in a little bit of a downturn. Shhhh, not too loud! Anyway, our financial state most assuredly sucks for everyone, but all the nifty mom and pop stores in South Florida are feeling the pinch. You know, the boutique shops, vendors, and outlets that fulfill our creative side. For years, they’ve given us the room to express ourselves beyond name-brand jeans and top 40 tunes — it’s time we gave back! All you have to do is check out the Pink Ghost Fun Fair, from noon to 6 p.m. today in downtown Fort Lauderdale (201 S. Andrews Blvd.).

The Fun Fair — organized by indie toy, art, and gift shop, Pink Ghost — will bring together a host of local businesses who share a common love for everything slightly left of the mainstream. With this many cool vendors throwing down in one spot, you’ll be able to do all your Christmas shopping in one afternoon: pick up the newest Blitzen Trapper album courtesy of Delray’s coolest record store, Backbone Music; get some good reads for your nephew at the Books & Books stand; or order your grandma a fresh blueberry pie from Miami’s Purple Pie Company. You’ll also get first dibs on new plushies from Pinky Punk, vintage clothing from Pin Up Vixen, and witty T-shirts from Chix Ink and FFee Clothing.

There’s more? Yes, more! Pink Ghost has recruited celebrated local artists like Helena Garcia, Nathan Lumm, Marcos Rivera, and more to paint murals all along the inside of the Fun Fair space (which they moved into just for this occasion). Paola Mendez, co-owner of Pink Ghost, is particularly excited about a graffiti mural by artist Doug: “He couldn’t use aerosols indoors, so he did the mural all in acrylic, and it came out amazing!” Catch all the murals yourself, plus indie art for purchase from a dozen local artists and music from DJ Adam Foster when the Pink Ghost Fun Fair invades today! Admission is just $2. Call 954-616-1304, or visit pinkghost.net/funfair.
