Letters for November 13-19, 2008

Fishy Green

The Republicans should have quit while they were ahead ("Outing the Trojan Horse," Eric Barton, November 6). It's bad enough they got George W. Bush elected. Now they're exploiting the system to get their cronies elected to lower-level offices. Somebody's gotta stop this!

Broke and disorganized? They sound a lot like the Green Party.

Sen. Dave [Aronberg] is right on! This is a dirty trick just like the one Nader pulled on liberals in 2000. These silly little parties need to take some responsibility before they steal our votes.

You can't blame the Green Party for the Republicans' dirty little tricks. If you ask me, the problems are with the big parties because they are just controlled by money and have gotten too big for their own good.

He's Clean. Honest!

That's total bullshit ("Kimbo's a Sissy," Bob Norman, November 6). Why would Kimbo do it? The guy was trying to build a rep for himself, and he wouldn't have taken a dive like that. These stories came out after Tyson got knocked out by Buster Douglas. There were even rumors that before the fight, he had punched holes in his dressing room walls because he was so upset he had to take a dive. All B.S.

I fail to see what makes Kimbo a sissy. He fought, got beaten fair and square, and then accepted it gracefully, addressing the audience with respect. Based on Bob Norman's reasoning, I suppose every fight ends with one man being a sissy, because somebody has to lose. It's just like a South Floridian to try to disgrace those who should be considered hometown heroes instead of being proud of them and happy for them.

Mud Gets in Your Eyes

The article was very well-written ("Mud in Your Eye," Deirdra Funcheon, November 6). I read your publication all the time. I love the way you guys report things, and you are a great writer. Thanks for writing the story. I believe more people should be more informed, and I do my best at trying to open eyes. But like you say: The mud won't let them see.

If only we had elected officials in Florida who would stand up to big companies like FPL. Instead, they line up for the campaign contributions, then vote in favor of every major project that is good for the company but bad for the rest of us. Our green crusader of a governor should get back to talking solar and biofuels and just say no to another power plant that will do more harm than good.

Awesome article. I want to thank all of the people who have dedicated so much time to preserving our lands and caring for our health and well-being. Thank you also for bringing this to our attention. I think most of the community does not know what is going on. We are taking energy and clean water for granted.

Land of the Free

"There's a $1,000 deposit on the boat, he tells Schoone, from a guy in the Ukraine — who hasn't been heard from in several weeks" (Tailpipe, October 30).

This is offensive to the people of Ukraine, which has been an independent country for 17 years. The term "the Ukraine" refers to the situation prior to Ukraine's independence in which it was kept behind the Iron Curtain and dominated by the Soviet Union. Ukrainians are especially sensitive to this in view of what has recently happened to Georgia. The correct way to write this would be "a guy in Ukraine." Please respect Ukraine's independence!

How Lowe?

They do blow ("Lowe's Blows," Amy Guthrie, October 30)! How can Lowe's, with any conscience, consider ripping out those wetlands/wildlife for another Lowe's plaza only a few miles from another practically empty Lowe's and with all those other empty existing plazas? What a waste! Don't they know that once this wetland is gone, it's never coming back! Soon, there won't be anything left for our children.
