You don't usually find hand-painted, wooden dildos peeking out of the shrubbery in downtown Fort Lauderdale. While you might wish that you could, there are simply none to be had. But on one evening out of the entire year, all of that changes.

On this magical night, it is not uncommon to see the youthfully spirited scampering up trees, buildings, or any other intermediate that could be standing between them and their goal: locally crafted art. Yes, it's the Eighth Annual Art Scavenger Hunt! The event is one part mob scene, two parts sticky finger free-for-all. Here's how it works: A big gaggle of local artists make as much original stuff as they can -- which can be anything from the above mentioned wooden dildos, to large canvas works and giant metal sculptures -- and there are no solid rules except Don't Be Greedy. (It's good form to only walk out with two pieces.) Next, the artists hide the pieces in any nook they can within a several block range, a special hunk of terrain determined by Stephen Sticht, the hunt's grand architect.

Then, the giddy mob receive maps of space that's designated "on limits." When released, many smartly don headlamps and shoes with laces. After that, there's a bit of a stampede, a lot of laughing, screaming, and good cheer, and when all the art that can be snatched up is, the mob reconvenes over beers, and the artists sign the works found by the mob. Then everyone rejoices. For one nifty night, our city is hip; you don't want to miss out. Oh yeah, and the whole thing is free. Find the party people tonight at 8 p.m. at the Downtowner Saloon (10 S.
